Topical Mitoquinol

Mitoquinol cream and serum have been formulated into products ready to be launched in the cosmetic market. Mitoquinol science provides a clear point of difference to compete at the high end with products such as Strivectin and Prevage.

Skin photoaging is a scarring fibrotic process caused by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors that manifests in wrinkles and age spots. The body's natural aging process leads to decreased antioxidant defences resulting in increased oxidative damage and thus slows the repair of the skin's cells. Skin damage also results from extrinsic causes, such as exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light which creates oxidative stress in the keratinocytes and fibroblasts inducing micro-scaring. This photodamage can be reduced by avoiding the sun and using UV sun protection.

The global consumer healthcare market is currently worth over US$8 billion and skin care is by far the most lucrative aspect of this market, currently worth over US$5 billion. Asia is the fastest growing region and direct sales the fastest growing retail sector.

Despite the huge profits skin care products can deliver, it is a crowded market, with many reformulated products entering the market each year. There are few opportunities to launch truly innovative products with a clear and scientifically valid point of difference and patent protection ensuring exclusivity.

Mitoquinol is a product with these desired characteristics. The innovative point of difference is that Mitoquinol penetrates skin cells and protects the cells energy source; the mitochondria. You age if your mitochondria age. With its patented positive charge, Mitoquinol targets the negatively charged mitochondria, thereby penetrating and accumulating 1000 fold. Current antioxidants cannot penetrate the skin cell wall or the site of free radical production, the mitochondria. Consequently they are limited as treatments of skin aging and are restricted to a moisturizing effect only.

By protecting and maintain the skins cells source of energy, Mitoquinol topical cream and serum have the potential to treat, heal and prevent skin wrinkles, scars, brown spots and pigmentation as well as reducing the thinning of the skin that occurs with aging. This was studies by Prof John Voorhees and Dr Gary Fisher at the University of Michigan, Department of Dermatology. They identified that Mitoquinol was the only antioxidant that could penetrate human skin cells ex vivo and prevent photo-oxidative damage to human skin keratinocytes and fibroblasts.

Mitoquinol Cream ready to launch topical products

Mitoquinol is available as a 50ml 0.5% topical cream, formulated with materials that are natural or naturally sourced at origin.

When applied to the skin, it is non-irritant unlike Prevage and other similar creams containing retinoids such as Retin-A. After 1 day the skin is radiant and moisturised. After 7 days it has a lightening effect on skin and fades brown spots. After 4 weeks the skin has less fine wrinkles and scars. We have impressive efficacy and tolerance data in 30 subjects who applied Mitoquinol cream for 1 to 6 weeks.

Thirty people evaluated the simple regimen of applying Mitoquinol cream to their skin once or twice daily, according to their own preference. The results of this evaluation by 30 people show that application of Mitoquinol cream resulted in improvements in the skin of 28 of the 30 participants. Importantly, no-one reported skin irritation or any other negative effects which were criteria that were important to the consumers.
